Endowment Scholarships & Annual Memorial Scholarships

Our first endowment memorial scholarship.

Criteria: Financial need, GPA 3.0 minimum, Science Major with a preference in Biology/Environmental studies.

The Horn Foundation has very generously donated funds yearly, part of the funds go to scholarships and part to the endowment fund.

Criteria: Academic achievement, Community service, and financial need.

Bob and Dee Mann were active community members in Nooksack Valley.

Criteria: GPA 2.0, vocational. Multiple Scholarships available.

William and Catherine Snider retired to Maple Falls. Catherine (Kay) had a passion for children, So it is Kay's honor to donate her entire estate to non-profit organizations.

Criteria: 3.0 GPA and above, must have attended their high school years while at Nooksack Valley High School, In the event that the student has transferred to NVHS from another school, Nooksack Valley Scholarship Foundation may choose to waive this requirement. Majoring in Law Enforcement, Police Science or Criminal Justice Program. Two year institutions will be acceptable, but four year program is preferred. Leadership qualities, such as the honors program or student government, will also be taken into consideration. Multiple Scholarships available

Dwayne F and Barbara Dunlap were long time active members of the Nooksack community. Dwayne attended Nooksack Valley High School prior to being drafted into WWII in 1945 and served until his discharge at the end of the war. After the war he married his high school sweetheart Barbara Caldwell in 1946 and took over the family house moving business Dunlap House Moving, which he did for over 30 years while raising 4 children. Dwayne moved multiple houses that he purchased into Nooksack that he turned into rental homes. He moved the old Blaine Visitor Center to Nooksack and started Dunny's Drive Inn in 1979, which Dwayne and Barbara ran until their retirement. He also moved an old warehouse from the port of Bellingham into Nooksack where Dwayne and Barb operated Pioneer Traders. He served on the Nooksack Valley School board for 20 years and served on the board for Nooksack Valley Water Association for many years. He loved gardening and was an avid hunter and enjoyed going on various hunting trips. He also enjoyed restoring his 1942 army jeep and 1930 John Deere tractor. Barbara dedicated her life to God and to her family. Barbara graduated from Western Washington State College in 1946. She got a job teaching school in Montesano, Washington before coming back and marrying her high school sweetheart on her 21st birthday on December 20, 1946, and then taught school in Sumas for another 4 years. She then spent the rest of her career raising her own family and doing payroll and accounting for their House Moving business and later at Dunny's Drive In where she was famous for putting notices on the reader board.

Greg Saar, a 1973 graduate of NVHS, exemplifies the power of determination and drive. Starting as a box boy in the grocery business, he worked his way up to become a successful multi-store owner and operator. His journey is a testament to how hard work, perseverance, and an entrepreneurial spirit can carry you from a small hometown to a place of meaningful impact. Through this endowment, the Saar Family hopes to inspire future NVHS graduates—and remind family, friends, and the broader community—of the importance of remembering your roots and giving back when you're able. Motivated by a strong belief in the potential of every young person in our district, this endowment helps students pursue higher education, reach their goals, and create a brighter future for themselves and those around them.

Each year the NVSF gives out multiple unrestricted scholarships to graduating applicants.

Scholarship: $500-$1000 each

Each year the NVSF is given multiple endowments from community members wanting to support Nooksack Valley Seniors in their mission to further their education. This endowment money is passed directly onto qualified seniors.

Erik was with Nooksack Valley Dollars for Scholars from the start in 1998 until 2013. He was an active leader in the Nooksack Valley Community. Nooksack Valley Scholarship Foundation has made a Scholarship in his honor.

Criteria: 3.5 GPA minimum, School and Community involvement, Responsible leadership and citizenship.

Dr. Gilbert D. McCollum, Jr. was a dedicated botanist for the USDA, renowned for his work in developing disease-resistant onions, potatoes, carrots and asparagus. A proud graduate of Glen Echo School, he, along with his sisters, attended school in the historic building on Goodwin and South Pass Road. After a distinguished career in agricultural science, Dr. McCollum retired to the family homestead, staying connected to the land that shaped his roots. This scholarship honors his legacy, supporting students with a passion for science, technology, agriculture, and a dedication to bettering their communities.

Criteria:

1. $2,500 each
2. To be awarded to one male student and one female student
3. Eligible graduate will be attending a two or four year college or technical college with a focus on Science or Technical Majors (including but not limited to biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science, mechanical etc)
4. No preference to GPA

Dennis and Audrey Brown of Blaine, Washington, were beloved members of their community whose lives were defined by generosity, hard work, and a deep commitment to family and service. Together, they built a life rooted in kindness, integrity, and a genuine care for others, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew them.

Dennis was known for his strong work ethic, steady character, and willingness to lend a helping hand. Audrey brought warmth and compassion to every space she entered, forming meaningful connections and uplifting those around her. They shared a dedication to supporting their community and encouraging others to pursue their goals.

This scholarship honors Dennis and Audrey’s legacy by supporting students who demonstrate perseverance, character, and a commitment to making a positive difference—values they lived by every day.

Award Amount: $5,000, paid over 2 years
